![]() ![]() really? that may be a deal breaker for me, I love uplink to death also and was seriously considering getting this, I just assumed stuff like that was in. I saw someone describe it as a "text adventure" with a Uplink-like interface, seems accurate.Īh. There's some nice 90s-00s references to "1337 culture", quotes never hurt anyone. You're left with some basic commands with minimal syntax and automagical binary exploits that are used to gate progress. They took the Uplink's take on the "hollywood hacker" but didn't bring the gameplay along with it. ![]() This isn't a sandbox like Uplink, there is no money, there are no banks to hack, there are no upgrades or gameplay choices to be made (at least from as far as I've got). Very basic tasks without much payoff beyond some story progression. I love Uplink and I'm a professional linux sysadmin but this game just feels like work. Like it was a real world and there were real consequences for every action I took. Then just watch the news feed and find that the person I framed was arrested! That kind of stuff made Uplink feel much more alive. Or I could transfer it to someone else, and in the process of covering my tracks I could even frame someone else for the money transfer through log editing. After the contract was completed, I was free to hack the bank, go into that bank account and transfer all the money to myself. I could take a contract of tracking a money trail through banks, and along the way find a bank account with millions in it. Uplink was certainly not perfect, but it was much more open and gave players freedom to learn strategies that had nothing to do with an objective. So I had to cheat to gain that hack tool, all because I dared to diverge from the linear path the game wanted me to take. Which you can only get legitimately from Project Junebug. It was impossible to beat because it requires me to have a port hack tool for Medical Services. When I decided to complete a different contract instead to reach 1/100 status, I was immediately assigned the end-game contract. I was given an email telling me I was given access to the Project Junebug contract. Hacknet feels very linear with not much to do outside the main objectives.Īt times it can even punish you for straying away from the linear path they want you to go on.
